Embracing the Final Week: A Principal’s Reflection on the Importance of Slowing Down and Savoring the End of the School Year

By Shane Killinger, IPLI Mentor, Brown County Schools

As the school year nears its end, the excitement of summer vacation often engulfs both students and teachers alike. However, as the principal of this institution, I want to take a moment to emphasize the significance of slowing down and cherishing the final week of school. Let us explore the reasons why this time is valuable for everyone involved.

  1. Reflecting on Achievements: The last week of school presents a golden opportunity for reflection. It is a time to celebrate the accomplishments and growth that each student and teacher has experienced throughout the academic year. As a principal, I encourage our school community to take the time to acknowledge and appreciate the progress made, no matter how big or small. Reflecting on these achievements boosts confidence and fosters a sense of fulfillment and pride in one’s work.
  2. Building Lasting Connections: The final week of the school year allows for meaningful connections to be nurtured. Students and teachers have spent the year learning and growing together, and now is the time to strengthen those bonds further. We create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere through activities like sharing stories, organizing special events, or simply engaging in heartfelt conversations. By connecting with one another, we foster a sense of belonging, which contributes to a positive school culture.
  3. Embracing Closure and Closure: In the haste of preparing for the summer break, it is easy to overlook the importance of closure. The final week allows students and teachers to wrap up ongoing projects, tie up loose ends, and say goodbyes. By engaging in closure activities, such as reflection journals, farewell assemblies, or exchanging heartfelt messages, we allow everyone to acknowledge the end of a significant chapter while embracing the possibilities of the future.
  4. Celebrating Shared Experiences: The final week of school is an excellent time for celebration. It gives us a chance to reminisce on the shared experiences and milestones of the past year. Whether it is an end-of-year party, awards ceremony, or creative showcase, these events bring joy and create lasting memories. By celebrating together, we develop a sense of camaraderie and unity within the school community, fostering a positive and uplifting environment.
As the principal, I urge everyone to slow down and savor the last week of school. Take the time to reflect, connect, find closure, and celebrate the journey. By embracing these moments, we strengthen the bonds within our school community and create a foundation for future success and growth. Let us cherish and enjoy this valuable time together!
